Mutunga Kore

14 - 25 June 2024 (Te Auaha Gallery, 65 Dixon Street, Wellington)

Mutunga Kore tells a story about iwi history through the lenses of artists Vianney Parata and Kauia Moriarty.

It uses visual language born from the traditional practice of kōwhaiwhai painting to share stories and narratives specific to the artists’ respective and shared whakapapa.

Through the limitless potential of kōwhaiwhai, Mutunga Kore intertwines concepts of history, toi Māori and collective identity in a mesmerising display of visual storytelling. This exhibition delves into the essence of whakapapa and cultural narratives as a way of binding people to the past, present, and future.
