Petals and Threads: Patterns in Nature and Needle

18 - 27 September 2025 (Te Auaha Gallery, 65 Dixon Street, Wellington)

Explore the beauty, diversity, and detail of Aotearoa’s plant life through an extraordinary collaboration between ecologist and artist Kate McAlpine and members of the Wellington Embroiderers’ Guild.

Petals and Threads features 40 original works: Kate’s nature-based art, created using found materials such as leaves, flowers, shells, and insect wings, paired with unique hand-stitched interpretations by over 20 Guild members. Each embroidery reimagines the original artwork, using a variety of techniques and creative approaches to bring patterns in nature to life through needle and thread. All artworks will be available for purchase via online auction.

Join us for two hands-on workshops at Te Auaha during the exhibition:

  • Embroidery workshop: 1pm on 20 September. Beginners welcome, all materials provided
  • Plant art workshop: 1pm on 27 September. All materials provided but feel free to bring plant material from your garden!

The exhibition is part of a fundraising project supporting the New Zealand Plant Conservation Network and the Wellington Embroiderers’ Guild.
